I have a few Yoga VCR tapes. This is my first DVD. I am blissful that it makes worthy spend of options DVD provides – the ability to provide menus and skip forwards and backward easily.

There are several workouts for beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. Within each of these categories, there are further selections for long and short workouts that are either general practices or have specific goals (body areas, aches & grief, etc) .

I have not done an advanced workout yet. I was cheerful that in an intermediate workout there were 2 poses I have not seen before on a tape or in a class. The poses were clearly explained and it was easy to follow the tape. The instructor, JJ, often shows or tells you about different ways you can modify poses to suit your body’s ability (or inability!) .

I have a 2 year conventional. I absolutely care for that there are so many workouts to decide from that I can always bag one to fit in the free time I have while she naps, or early in the morning, or while she’s playing with Dad. No more saying, ‘Well, guess I have to do it tomorrow’ honest becuase I don’t have an hour free to complete one of my tapes. Distinct, I know, I could unbiased get my gain workout up, but it objective doesn’t happen.

Some reviews complain about the gloomy hide between poses – that it is disruptive and not conducive to sail. I don’t have a scrape with it. The first time you do a workout you will peep it. I suggest watching the brief segment on technique review. She clearly explains the different body parts and alignment cues she mentions. I found it very profitable.

The teacher’s style is very relaxed and straightforward. I do not like overly flowery and spiritual delivery – I always feel like that should be up to the student. I found JJ’s style to be perfect for me.

In all – this is a gigantic DVD and I recommend it to anyone looking for a worthy variety of quality workouts. The instruction is sure enough for beginners, the workouts captivating enough for at least intermediate students. I’m not advanced, so I can’t order for them!

I am a beginner in the wide world of yoga. I took a class this semester with an instructor who really views yoga as a plot of life, and his gentle come got me curved. Up until now I’ve been sticking with supplementing the class with the Living Arts AM & PM yoga station which is astounding, but when the class started I wanted to secure something longer to sort of replace it. I chose this and could not have done better.

The dvd is divided by levels and times, so there is mammoth oportunity for plenty of variety. I appreciate the instructor encouraging and view manner “Go as far as your legs want to go today” etc. They also indicate modifications with props if you are less flexible.

Understand that the intention the variety is created is each pose or series is save on the dvd as a separate chapter and then when you chose a routine you derive a preprogramed station of poses&series, so it is not a space of individually created workouts but rather different mixtures from a celebrated bag. However there are enough poses there that it does not feel repetitive.

All in all if you were to lift one yoga dvd, I would highly recommend this one.

For those that are unaware of what this film is, it has become an icon in the art house circle of film. The film won the Special Jury Prize at the 1957 Cannes Film Festival; a testament to its impact in this arena. I don’t pay mind to “Artsy” films and usually don’t be pleased them, however I took a chance on the novel Criterion DVD release and loved it; thus the need and desire to upgrade to Blu Ray.

The chronicle is one of a knight (Antonius Block) and his squire (Jöns) returning from the Crusades only to gather that his homeland is being conquered by the plague. He travels the land towards his goal of being reunited with, what he has stated, is a wife whom he married young and has not seen for the 10 years he spent in the Crusades. In the opening scene Anotonius is greeted by Death. In a sequence that has been parodied in several films (Bill & Ted battling Death at Twister comes to mind), Antonius challenges death to a game of chess. If Anotonius wins, he goes on with his life; if he loses, his life comes to an slay. The game is not finished in a first sitting and there are several scenes in which the game takes a role.

As he travels, a rag notice band of people accompany him; a smith, the smith’s wife, a woman whom Jöns saves from death and rape and two actors and their child with whom Antonius shares strawberries and milk in a scene where he begins to feel at peace.

Antonius struggles with his lot in life; questioning the existence of God, begging Death to lend him some of evidence of God’s existence (to which Death offers none) and eventually accepting his fate and using his reprieve to put the lives of the actors and their child thus giving meaning to a life which he felt meaningless.

To earn to the Blu Ray specific details, the video is transferred from a freshly prepared and restored film master. At least one sequence I capture seeing hurt in the unique DVD, which is shown in Criterion’s current “how was it remastered” extra, is no longer damaged in this transfer. In fact, there was no easily apparent distress to be found anywhere and a more pristine print is likely unattainable. Criterion did a profitable job on the video transfer and have given the video an upgrade it desperately deserved. It is presented on the Blu Ray disc in it’s new aspect ratio of 1.37:1 so anyone expecting a cropped, stretched or otherwise molested image will be disappointed. Everyone expecting a movie presented in its recent aspect ratio will certainly be glad.

Not being a tremendous expert on things like film grain and what formats point to more grain than others when transferred to HD, I have to execute it known that there IS grain prove in this film. I don’t know, however, whether this grain is due to the modern format of the masters or if Criterion added said grain during their transfer.

On the audio side, you have the current Swedish mono audio remastered and restored in 24 bit LPCM uncompressed format. There isn’t a pop, click or crackle to be found, fair certain audio free of defects and bellow. Also available, and I’m unaware of the format of it or if it has any damage/hiss/pop/crackle, is an optional English language dubbed sound track which I did not listen to.

Subtitles are improved from the unique DVD release as the subtitles are a more literal translation. I admit to not really noticing a mammoth dissimilarity in this arena, but if Criterion claims to have improved them, I will acquire their word for it.

For extras you have quite a few unusual ones (and all the former ones, minus one, detailed below) :

-Introduction to the movie by Ingmar Burgman (originally intended for presentation prior to playing the film on Swedish TV)

-Audio commentary by Peter Cowie (same as the modern DVD release)

-Afterword on the commentary by Cowie (novel)

-Bergman Island (region of mini-documentaries merged to construct 1- 83 puny documentary w/ interviews of Bergman; first time on any home video format)

-Archival audio only interview with Antonius Block actor, Max von Sydow

-1989 tribute to Bergman by Woody Allen

-Original trailer

-Bergman 101 (Peter Cowie gives a selected filmography of Bergman’s work)

For packed in extras, you will receive a printed booklet with an essay by film critic Gary Giddins. It’s a very high quality printing.

The only extra that doesn’t seem to have made the transfer to HD, as it was really specific to the current DVD release, was the Restoration Demonstration. Everything else from the fresh is included, along with quite a few, very valid, additions.

If you fill the unique DVD release and want to believe the definitive edition of the movie, you shouldn’t hesitate to win up this Blu Ray disc.

If you contain the fresh and don’t really care for the film or don’t feel the need to upgrade, then nothing on this release will change your mind.

If you don’t fill the previous release and want to peer what all the “fuss” is about and want it in as perfect a presentation as is possible, pick this on Blu Ray.

As a heed, the recent DVD release is “matted” in order to ensure every TV/display shows off as powerful of the release as possible. Only the Blu Ray disc retains the recent 1.37:1 ratio.

The film:

Bergman is one of those things. He won’t appeal to everyone. It’s arty, yes. It’s high conception. But really, when you acquire down to it, many of his movies are not hard to gape at all. This one might be the most accessible. Max Von Sydow plays a crusading knight returning home wearily after a long campaign. With his servant, he encounters a country besieged by plague and despair. Against this backdrop, he encounters Death, whom he challenges to a chess match. Does he want to live forever? No. He wants answers to his soul-chilling skepticism about God and life.

The performances are all very capable, especially Von Sydow and Gunnar Björnstrand as his squire. Dialogue is clipped and spare, but evocative. Sydow has some particularly superior scenes in the chapel, confessing his doubts.

Overall, it’s easy to gape why this film is hailed as a classic. It’s deep, but also brief enough and paced well enough to be exquisite. The ending is a bit cryptic, but not in an off-putting diagram. It should definitely be viewed by anyone with an start mind for “world cinema.”

The Blu-Ray:

This is a grand transfer. This is what I’m certain we all hoped “Dr. Strangelove” would be. There is a delicate, regular grain structure which allows us to perceive terrific detail, especially in foliage, facial features, and cloth textures. Dismal levels are solid and consistent, so objects in the shadows are always well delineated.

You MUST perform obvious your gamma and brightness are location well! This is a film in which a lot of stuff can be lost in the shadows – it is very high disagreement. In the opening shot, if your explain is crushing blacks, the mountains will search for like one murky blob, when in fact there is a grand amount of detail and shading on rocks. SO: if you do not have a disc like Digital Video Essentials, at the very least pop in a Lucasfilm disc to employ the “THX Calibrator.” It has a contrast/brightness pattern that should glean you situation true.

Extras include a LONG documentary/interview fragment with Bergman in his later life, presented in 1080i. Commentary is provided by a film scholar.

If you are a fan of Bergman or this film, this is a no-brainer. There is detail here you’d never explore on a DVD, and the dusky levels (so notable on a b/w film like this) are considerable deeper and more consistent than any SD presentation could allow. Extras are a nice complement, and for the label, you really can’t beat this, especially compared to what Criterion releases cost unbiased a few short years ago.

If you’re more of a neophyte to this kind of cinema, you should rent first. Sight if you like this sort of thing. Don’t be daunted by the reputation of this and other Criterion releases. Give it a generous objective try. You might be pleasantly surprised.

I saw this film when it was broadcast on UK TV around Christmas 2001. It is a wonderfully acted and hugely evocative historic epic of an improbable adventure fable. Essentially a British period drama with some pleasing actors who are eminently believable in their roles. The Shakespearean actor Kenneth Branagh stars as Shackleton with Lorcan Cranitch and Sign McGann as his accurate lieutenants Frank Wild and Tom Crean.

The first share of the film may tear a tiny for those enthusiastic to find to the ice and the just adventure, but it sets a historical basis for what is to follow. How Shackleton is up against the odds even before his ship has sailed and the planning for an expedition that may not actually happen is a legend in itself about Shackleton’s self-belief and his draw not to fail those who have attach their faith in him.

Once the yarn gets to the Antarctic, the frozen south and the pack ice, it inspires feelings of “How did they produce that examine so right, without actually doing it? “. The atmosphere of being lost in the middle of endless pack ice is portrayed very realistically and the human emotions of those caught up in this drama are believable.

For those who do not already know the memoir, I would recommend reading it first in one of the many books available. For me this is one of, if not the most fantastic stories of all time. It is like three wonderful adventures succor to serve.

I won’t spoil the elephantine record for the uninitiated, but in the first adventure Shackleton’s crew are stranded in the Antarctic pack ice for the winter, not a totally unexpected situation of affairs in itself, but certainly not great news. This slowly turns to exertion as the ice crushes the ship leaving the crew stranded on crumbling ice, miles (hundreds of miles) from land with no map of summoning back. They manage to find to dry land eventually on Elephant Island.

Elephant Island is a respite, but no area to hang around. The second adventure then starts when Shackleton and five others have to unpleasant 800 miles of the stormiest ocean in the world at on of the worst times of year in a 20-foot lifeboat.

This accomplished, they bag themselves on the substandard side of a ample island having to sinful peaks, ice fields and glaciers that no one had ever done before hand to approach a whaling state where from where rescue could be called. None of the 28 crew of the ship, the Endurance are lost against wonderful odds.

A wonderful account, that is engrossing for the Antarctic buff, history buff and any one who unbiased enjoys a superb chronicle.

This movie, combined with the excellent bonus material, is a generous bargain for those wishing to augment their reading on Shackleton’s myth Antarctic survival tale. It cannot be venerable as a famous source for learning about it, however.

For that, I highly recommend ‘Endurance: Shackleton’s Wonderful Voyage’ by Alfred Lansing.

Lansing ancient the diaries of the men as his considerable source, along with interviews of expedition survivors. The result is a distinguished more detailed thought of all of the men and how they came to be chosen so intuitively by Shackleton, using his unerring sense of not only their particular skills but how they would all work together as a team. Where the movie gives short shrift to perhaps the most fabulous piece of the entire adventure – the voyage of Shackleton and a few of the men from Elephant Island to South Georgia in a petite boat – Lansing’s book allows us to relive the sheer alarm and instruct exhaustion and deprivation the men faced. The movie spent far too mighty time location on the pre-voyage quest for financial backing and the fairly irrelevant sub-plots about wife and mistress – which, most certainly, had absolutely nothing to do with ‘The Greatest Survival Chronicle of All Time’. There was also precious diminutive detail in the movie about the many, many months the men spent on the pack ice, then on Elephant Island while Shackleton made his design to South Georgia and serve, and the means they all feeble to stop alive and relatively sane in their respective situations. Also, Shackleton’s extraordinary mountaineering feat in the crossing of South Georgia to the whaling place was not given its good due – truly an improbable accomplishment in its have factual.

The movie is, however, quite well done and the actors are very well-behaved and well cast. A bigger budget production could perhaps have better captured the daunting scope of the challenges faced by the expedition, but it would have had to be many hours longer.

All in all, when you purchase into memoir the bonus extras – the A&E biography of Shackleton and the 2-hour History Channel production on the exploration of Antarctica – it’s resplendent hard to beat this DVD status.

Just earn determined you read Lansing’s amazing chronicle to really rep the fleshy flavor of the wonderful hardships and sheer panic faced by Shackleton and his men, because you impartial won’t pick up that from this movie.

It’s Christmas Eve and there’s a blizzard that shuts down an airport stranding onboard travelers. Spencer (Dylan Christopher) and his sister Katherine (Dominique Saldana) are stuck in an Unaccompanied Minors room for the holiday instead of spending it with their Father. In the UMS room, there a group of kids (including Spencer) that sustain trying to win out of the room gather into even more peril. While those kids are being chased around the airport by security, the Unaccompanied Minors that were serene in the room (including Katherine) bag taken over to a hotel fair unhurried the airport. Spencer and the others determine to keep aside their differences and work together to earn out of the airport so Spencer can glean to his sister before she finds out Santa didn’t bring her any Christmas presents. Will Spencer be able to come his sister before Christmas morning?

I loved this movie because it’s hilarious and adventurous. It makes you want to laugh out loud and jump out of you’re seat. It’s the best movie I’ve seen all year! It will definitely, accomplish you want to look it again. This movie ideally shows you a comic Christmas yarn.

Let’s face it, there is a subgenre of family films that prepubescents absolutely adore, the one where the kids outsmart the atrocious, bumbling adults. Every generation has had them, from `The Puny Rascals’ to one of my personal childhood favorites, `The Goonies’. `Unaccompanied Minors’ is yet another entry into this subgenre, obvious to excite children into being even more wild and uncontrollable as we near this holiday season.

Part `Home Alone’, fragment `The Huge Escape’, `Unaccompanied Minors’ mixes elements from the two, but puts them on the ultimate sugar hasten. When a blizzard hits the Midwest all flights are grounded on Christmas Eve, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded, most notably the `Unaccompanied Minors’.

So what do you do with a bunch of rowdy, sugar filled, and parentless rug rats? Well if you are a grumpy, “Scrooge-like” airport manager played by stand up comedian Louis Sunless, you lock them in a basement and set aside Fez (Wilmer Valderrama) from `That 70’s Show’ in charge of them. Unfortunately for the upper brass of the airport there are a few youngsters who don’t follow like the other “sheep” and sneak out only to cause some holiday mischief.

What ensues is a cat and mouse-like hobble throughout the airport as Spencer (Dyllan Christopher) and his newly found posse, the self proclaimed “UM’s”, attempt to set the Christmas spirit for Spencer’s doubtful, younger sister. Of course some of the adventures along their quest are downright comical, including sliding down baggage chutes and a high urge, Looney Toons-ish sled hurry down a snowy, seemingly never ending, hill. Now ignoring the fact that a mountain-like hill next to an airport, which requires great amount of flat site to operate, is completely illogical, it does execute for an silly scene in the context of `Unaccompanied Minors’.

Granted there is enough material to support the youngsters more than entertained, including even the faintest hint of romance for the few who are starting to realize the opposite sex might not have cooties after all, `Unaccompanied Minors’ doesn’t always forget the adults either. Perhaps the best nod to the begrudging parents who have been dragged to `Unaccompanied Minors’ comes from the appearance of “The Kid” from `Bad Santa’. As one of the rouge members of “The UM’s” the young actor, Brett Kelly, who warmed Billy Bob’s frosty heart a few Christmases befriend is succor paying homage to his archaic character by quipping more of the queer and completely illogical jargon that we have advance to admire him for. Honest wait until you hear his explanation of what Christmas really is.

So if `Unaccompanied Minors’ is unprejudiced a bunch of bright mouth kids, running amok and causing hell for a bunch of adults on Christmas Eve, where exactly is the mountainous value for families to consume their children? Well by then demolish of the legend everything comes together for some agreeable obsolete fashioned Christmas morals. Miracles happen, families, unusual and aged, are reunited and of course our “Scrooge” character finally discovers the value of Christmas. In fact the sugar coated finale of `Unaccompanied Minors’ is so sweet, and surprisingly fulfilling, that many of the illogical, childish happenings throughout the film can be forgiven.

While it may not be as salubrious as the films that came before it, `Unaccompanied Minors’ is a surprisingly fun treat that the whole family can indulge in. The Madagascar 2 movie is a mountainous flick, fleshy of fun and witty lines. If you liked the first movie, this is more of the same, if not better and probably estimable of five stars. The second DVD featuring two Gash Penguin shorts for a total of about 25 minutes of video, isn’t worth the additional cost, in my conception. The first Madagascar release had a Penguin animation short included as an extra on the movie disc, whereas the original one has two shorts and charges the buyer for the priviledge. And frankly, I concept that the two penguin cartoons, while a bit comical, were a bit of a disappointment. If one is a Genuine fan of the Crop Penguins, then you’ll need to bag this DVD residence. Otherwise, I would recommend impartial getting the main feature and set aside yourself the $7.

As a teacher of Classical Greek and Roman Mythology I was looking forward to “Troy.” In the past I have establish together a unit on the Trojan War that included not only Homer’s legend poem the “Iliad,” but also the plays of Euripides and Aeschylus and other dilapidated works on the stories of these characters. In other words I am familiar with this memoir to the extent that when Briseis showed up wearing a garment with long sleeves I was upset that we did not salvage to glance the sparkling arms that were portion of her usual epithet. Bana does a splendid job of capturing Hector’s nobility without turning him into a marble statue, while Peter O’Toole fills the role of Priam naturally. On the Trojan side the problematic character is Paris (Orlando Bloom), again because of the writing more than the performance. Priam has negotiated peace between Troy and the Sparta of King Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson), but that is destroyed when Paris persuades Helen (Diane Kruger) to accelerate away with him. Both Hector and Priam know that Paris is obnoxious and their reasons for supporting him and thereby dooming Troy ring hollow (the less than stellar “Helen of Troy” television miniseries did a nice job of providing a solid motivation for the Trojans to protect Helen) .

Audio for the Blu Ray is presented lossless while the DVD’s audio sounds terrific given the limitations of the format. Colors are a bit bolder here than on the previous version to my eyes.

It appears that a lot of the special features from the previous edition have been ported over and the only fresh things are the introduction by Petersen as well as a retrospective 23 cramped interview where Petersen discusses the genesis of the current film and this project.

James Nachtwey is a grand human being. Committed to war photography for over 20 years, he proves in this film that the power of empathy is stronger than the power of cynicism. As I have dinky to add to the reviews before me about Mr. Nachtway’s career and works, I will concentrate on talking about the film itself. The filmmakers must have been warned against the opinion of making this documentary, as Nachtway knows the war photographer’s job is extremely perilous. And James Nachtway is there, without protecting himself from the deadly smokes of the ore except a towel around his mouth and nose. It will remain in your mind forever.

This DVD broke my heart twice – once while watching, and then again when I heard the news in April 2000 of Michael’s sudden death from heart attack (or, rather, broken heart as we know it must have been) . Gets 10 stars in my book – five for Koko and five for Michael.

I showed this to my cultural anthropology class as an introduction to language. They loved it. It gave them a whole different perspective on primate behavior and intelligence.
